Wrap up this winter with NOOSHIN – Stylish tailored coats for ladies

For a minute there is had me fooled. The warmer days, slightly lighter evenings…..perhaps the end of a mildly cold winter?  No such luck. A second snap of cold last night left the car frozen and saw a return to my favorite tailored winter coat.  Having created some beautiful coats this year using Harris Tweed, double wool crepe and my favorite Holland and Sherry cashmere range, I wanted to share with you one of my latest deliveries.

This coat was for one of my lovely clients who was Paris bound the next day. She happily reported on her return that she felt ‘super stylish’ amongst her fellow Parisians and its hardly surprising! The coat has been tailored using a purple ‘Sherry Kash’, combining the luxury of cashmere with wool, soft to the touch but with all the structure a tailored coat should have. The velvet trim and covered buttons create interesting detail - the coat is certainly a classic tailored piece, perfect to wear over a day dress or mid weight trouser suit. The coat can be shortened or lengthened depending on your individual requirements – that’s the beauty of bespoke tailoring!

Its never too late to start investing in your winter coat, although I received my new spring fabric bunches last week and they really are quite beautiful….

Keep warm

Your perfect wedding suit

Wedding season may seem a little far away, after all, Christmas was only last week right?!- But if you are planning on attending a wedding or better still, getting married this year, planning for your outfit begins now. There is choosing your fabric, the style of jacket and dress you’d like to wear, hats to be created and shoes to be dyed if you are looking for the perfect match that is.  I met two lovely ladies this week, both of whom, are marrying this year. They are looking for more constructed wedding suits with interesting fabrics, stylish detailing and of course, all beautifully fitted and tailored to their shape.

The beautifully tailored 'Catherine' jacket and 'Kelly' dress are examples of what can be made

Starting off with an obligatory cup of tea, design and cut are initially discussed and worked around your shape and everything from hemline, bust shape to the style of skirt, are considered. There is great room for flexibility in both design and feature, perhaps there is something special to the both of you we can work into your outfit – making it a truly unique garment .

I have beautiful selection of coloured silks to match your skin tone, the bridal party and there is always the option of going fabric shopping together, which will allow you to drape larger pieces of silk for the perfect match. Your chosen style is always cut to calico initially, this allows you to try something on before we even touch the fabric and tweaks to your initial design can be made to our pattern. Once we are both happy with the design and fit, your garment will be constructed and ready for delivery (you may choose an optional fitting here).

What you will leave the studio with, is an outfit you feel confident in wearing, knowing time and consideration have been spent together on fabrics, fit, cut and style…what more could you require on your special day?!

Penny, my wonderful Mother of the Bride

Last year I had the pleasure of working with Penny, a wonderful Mother of the Bride. Her daughters wedding was in September, the transition between seasons, so we began by choosing a fresh ‘Cornflower’ blue in a structured duppion silk with a darker facing trim around the collar and sleeves for contrasting detail. The colour also worked beautifully with the Bridal party (you can see the soft Rose colour worn by the bridesmaid below).

After selecting the designs together, I took Penny measurements and a cotton toile was produced so she had something to try on before we cut to fabric.  A few tweaks later we cut to fabric for our first garment fitting. The dress was a classic Empire line cut with a straight skirt. The scoop neck complimented the shorter jacket neckline and turned back sleeves and we also created a silk flower broach tying her outfit in with the bride and bridesmaids. Penny was great to work with and looked beautiful on the day of her daughters wedding.

Harris Tweed - Your perfect Winter warmer

The 'Penny' jacket

With winter well and truly here, its hard to stay looking stylish without basking yourself in a sleeping bag - style jacket. I must say, I recently purchased one with ducky feathers and all sorts of stuffing, but if you are looking for a stylish, smart wardrobe addition, I highly recommend a Harris Tweed jacket or coat. The tighter woven Harris Tweed wool is produced in the Isle of Harris and Outer Hebrides and its resistance to the cold can’t be beaten. What I love about Harris Tweed (amongst many things), is that the fabric does as its told. Unlike velvet, which often has a mind of its own – especially when pressing (!)- Harris Tweed stays in place, retains shape and is guaranteed to keep you warm throughout the winter months. I also love the way the dye takes to the wool creating flecks of colour and interest throughout the fabric. The fabric is alive with interest and the woven colours mean it’s a versatile addition your wardrobe. We matched the below jacket, created for my wonderful client Penny, with Mother of Pearl buttons, which picked up the colours beautifully. She also had a tailored day dress made to go with the jacket: I can see it working with jeans and a cotton shirt too for weekends. Fabric samples can be requested through Holland and Sherry or nooshin@nooshin.co.uk

Stay Warm!x

A Suit Fit for a First Lady

My clients come to me with all sorts of tailoring requests from beautifully tailored 40's inspired suits, to dress designs based upon the hit series Madmen. Most recently, I delivered a suit I have been working on over the last few months with a lovely client of mine. It was my task to recreate the iconic two piece, most famously worn by Jackie Kennedy in the 1960's. The bright pink boucle wool suit, with its striking contrast detail and gold buttons, became one of her most famous suits - not to mention the fact she was wearing this suit the day her husband was assassinated. I began by studying the detail on the suit and made my own subtle changes. My client had an hourglass shape, so we smoothed off the boxy hem line on the jacket and tailored the waist to nip in and out at exactly the right place. I choose pipped pockets over patch for a more subtle effect and reduced the collar. The final piece, featured here and on the Vintage Seekers website site looked fabulous...I'm thinking a navy boucle contrast for myself!

Precious Awards

Yesterday was a great day. Mainly because I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with some truly inspiring ladies at ‘The Precious Awards’, founded by Foluke Akinlose . Precious celebrates the achievements of entrepreneurial women of colour recognizing business and leadership and celebrating determination and innovation. Everyone it seemed had achieved so much in their personal lives and businesses, it was hard not to see everyone as a winner. Out of all the stories I listened too, Precious’ charity partner ‘Body and Soul’ really moved me.  One of their volunteers, who had come to the charity initially for help and support after being ostracized from friends and family talked about her own journey from discovering she was positive, to having her son, to where she is now – working as a volunteer providing full time support to others in her situation.  The UK based charity has been created to provide support for those affected by HIV and their families and an environment where they can be together with volunteers in a safe and welcoming environment. They also aim to provide individuals and companies with up-to-date information about HIV/Aids – perhaps over time this knowledge will empower people and take away some of the stigma attached to the disease. If you are looking to volunteer a few hours of your month or are perhaps working for a company, which is in the position to help contribute with medical research and preservation, visit http://bodyandsoulcharity.org/

Kate Middleton and why she gets it right..

I love Kate Middleton’s style. She breathes a sort of life into ladies tailoring, showing that key pieces such as a well structured jacket or tailored coat, never date and can be re-worked time and time again with different accessories and the clever use of colour combining. By sticking to what she knows works for her, she has developed her own individual style (and quite a fashion following!) combining seasonal pieces with her own classic style.

Kate designs and chooses pieces that suit and flatter her shape - she is very tall and has a narrow frame, so creating balance wearing garments that work with the contours of her natural shape are very important. The kick of where the jacket falls on her waistline, the distance between nape and neckline down to the length of her dresses and skirts, have all been carefully measured out for maximum style impact and exude a sort of unspoken sexiness.

Kate tends to choose strong colours - navy, red, pink - often pairing bold outfits with nude shoes – a sure way of extending those calves and allowing the focus on one piece at a time. She combines bold colour with detail, such as the military style dress McQueen designed, showing a nod towards seasonal style but keeping things classic, fitted and in keeping with her own individual style by choosing a very ‘Kate’ hat and clutch.

Kate invests in quality fabrics that go the extra mile. Using quality yarns from one of my ost favorite fabric suppliers, Joel and Sons, ensures her pieces work time and time again, hence the reemergence of her favourite wardrobe pieces  and much to the dislike of the press who would like to see her as a clothes horse!

A beautifully tailored Alexander McQueen dress. Great seasonal piece that nips in tightly at the waist graduates out to create  a slim hourglass shape

My bride, the beautiful Mrs Paula Amani

Paula came to me with her own sketch-book loaded with great designs and clippings. Her inspiration was 1940’s Hollywood starlets  - Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake – alongside her own design ideas. From this, I sketched out my personal ideas, taking into account her inspiration and body shape.  After we had signed off our dress design and I had collected those all important measurements,  we created a Toile(template of final design) using a polyester satin. Its not the nicest fabric but it brought our design to life and allowed us to pin and manipulate the pattern without touching the silk. It also gave us an idea of how the fabric would drape and work for her on the day.

Paula and myself spent some time at Pongees (a fantastic silk supplier on Hoxton Square) draping the various shades of white and cream silk over her, this gave us time to choose the right shade of colour which complimented her  skin. It also helped confirm our final design idea and we cut to fabric, sealing seams a month before the wedding.  Paula looked beautiful and was an absolute pleasure to work with.

My lovely client Vanessa...

My most fabulous client and friend Vanessa Vallely in a NOOSHIN original. Vanessa is Head of Business Management for Finance, Strategy & Legal at Aviva Investors: she is also co founder of http://www.wearethecity.com/, a website providing female and City centric information to professional women within London. Having met Vanessa in 2008 it was a real pleasure to work with, and tailor for her again. The idea for the ‘Vanessa’ suit was created from her love of the late 40’s/50’s inspired fashion –cinched waist, shawl collar detail – combined with her passion for bold colours, detailed fabric and interesting trim finishes. Vanessa said ‘ I want my clothes to express my spirit, to wear clothes that make me feel confident, built for my shape - are ultimately are a reflection of me and my personality. I love the having something designed from button to seam. When you get the finished article you have stepped in the world of a fashion designer and created something truly magical’. We are currently working on the ‘Vanessa’ suit mark 2, amongst other things....

Whilst your browsing, please take a moment to visit Vanessa’s site, she is constantly working around the clock to promote and support a variety of charitable causes and could always do with some extra support:-)

Beautiful fabrics, bespoke designs...

As I look out my window today, Jack the Jack Russell firmly seated by my side and a forth cup of hot tea brewing, I am feeling the first signs of Autumn. Did we even have a summer? I’m not sure, but I wouldn’t count a few days of hot sun, ‘summer’.  So with that in mind and a certain fresher feel in the air, I wanted to introduce you to some of my brand new A/W fabrics. They are Holland and Sherry’s latest. From brightly colored Cashmeres to dashing Tweeds perfect for your winter overcoat(bespoke of course), the latest colors and designs really are something. The Khan cashmere has to be felt to be believed and the Sherry Tweed is perfect if you are looking for unique fabric designs; I doubt you'd find this in Hobbs. In keeping with A/W fashions 2011 this year, I am currently working on creating some beautiful A-line dresses and jackets for my own collection. Tweed, boucle and Pink crepe wool are certainly in the mix…Ill keep you posted with pictures shortly! Love Nooshin

A perfect summers day

I had the pleasure of watching my wonderful client Jo deliver her end of year speech to parents and students at the Princess Helena College this weekend. We chose a beautiful combination of coloured Duppion silks- ‘wine’ to compliment her warmer skin tone and of course the perfect choice of colour for the winter months and a rich sandy colour for her jacket, the perfect accompaniment for a summers day speech.

Supporting the Georges Malaika Foundation

I have recently been working with the Georges Malaika Foundation, which is currently responsible for the education and upbringing of 16 Congolese orphan girls. The founder, Congolese- Cypriot Noella Coursaris, runs the foundation alongside a modelling career and raising awareness of some of the problems facing DCR.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to the charity and have been helping organise the charity fashion show, which is being held this Saturday October 2nd. The evening will showcase a beautiful collection of Congolese garments, which have been made by the orphans and are to be auctioned off to raise funds towards building a school. We are also exploring the possibility of starting up a fashion label, which would allow the girls to design and create garments all year round, introducing some truly beautiful garments into the UK market...watch this space!

So if you fancy a few drinks, some Congolese fashion and a DJ set played by Carl Kennedy come along! You can buy your tickets from Noellla by emailing rsvp@gmfafrica.org and the event is being held at The Penthouse, 39-43 Underwood St. N1 7LG London.

Look forward to seeing you there!
